Artist Profile — Zoe Sernack

Zoe Sernack is an artist who lives and works in Eora /Sydney, Australia. Zoe holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The National Art School and works full-time in her studio practice. She paints, illustrates and creates visual imagery of many forms, from drawings to paintings to jewellery. She has also run a number of gallery spaces to support emerging artists.

Zoe’s art practice is about continually engaging with the natural world. A keen observer of her environment, Zoe invites us to understand her visual language through an inbuilt desire to constantly engage with the world she experiences.

Her paintings are multi-layered, being as much about the medium of paint and the process of painting, as an experience of the Australian landscape. Her work explores the connections between landscape, memory and the subconscious. She has an instinctive understanding of colour, line and texture, whist balancing abstracted forms. Zoe’s objective has never been to depict, but rather to evoke a visual connection, whether it be a sense of place, a feeling or a memory.

Practicing for 25 years with some 65 exhibitions under her belt, Zoe is established in her practice and “this will be a lifetime journey.”

Artist Statement:

“My paintings are imagined abstract landscapes. I capture what emerges for me initially, a process of connecting memory, inspiration and my subconscious rather than representing somewhere specific. Through layers of mark making, paint and abstracted forms, I hope to engage the viewer and spark a personal connection of belonging through their own experiences, whether it be a sense of place, a feeling or igniting a memory.

My process is very intuitive; I never have a particular outcome in mind when I start a painting. It is a play between perception, balance and consideration. I have an innate desire to engage with the world I experience. I am constantly fascinated by the intelligence of the natural world, its networks below the earth’s surface, and the flourishing compositions we see above the ground.

I feel grateful and appreciative that I can be inspired by the Australian landscape and its prolific botanicals. - Zoe Sernack
