Artist Statement:
“At the core of my practice is the concept of the stain — a mark or discolouration that lingers, difficult to remove. For me, the stain symbolises the lasting impact of past experiences, particularly those that have shaped us emotionally. My abstract paintings are devoid of figurative elements, yet they evoke a sense of nostalgia, contemplation, and introspection. These works are not just visual; they carry an intimate, almost palpable energy that suggests a deeper human presence. Through subtle layers of pigment, texture, and form, I create a fluid, intimate portrait of myself — one drawn from my personal memories, observations, and imagined experiences, spanning from childhood to adulthood. My work invites viewers to engage with the emotional depths of the human experience, offering a space for reflection and connection.” - Emily Ebbs
About ‘The Site of Return’:
“This small body of work, composed of six pieces, draws from both past and present. Some are built upon fragments of earlier artworks; pieces I created years ago, then tore apart and set aside. Others originated as part of a larger whole, now reimagined through segmentation. In revisiting these remnants, the process has come to feel like a collaboration not only with nature but also with my past self.
Many of these works were created on site, outdoors, where the environment interacted with the materials in spontaneous ways. Rain caused paint to bleed, wind shifted fabric, and the earth left its trace. I often work directly on the ground, both inside and outside the studio, layering canvases so that paint and washes seep through, creating a dialogue between what is above and what lies beneath. Sitting or kneeling on the work allows me to be physically immersed in it, a grounding practice that shapes both the form and the feeling of each piece. Some works are treated with a layer of eucalyptus dye, which I use as a way to anchor myself in the process. It is an intentional act of grounding that connects body, material, and land. The title of the show — ‘The Site of Return’ — implies a revisiting, to old works, to nature, to a former self; the hibernation of winter offering a time of reflection and contemplation.” - Emily Ebbs
