Rebeccah Power is a contemporary abstract painter who, since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2000, has developed an extensive exhibition history both in Australia and internationally. Her practice is inspired by the vast sky that surrounds her home on Bunurong Country along the South Coast of Australia. Power’s oil on linen paintings are often described as atmospheric, ethereal, and hazy, inviting viewers to shift between the realms of formlessness and structure.
In contemplating the interplay of colour and light found in the sky and sea— rainbows, fog, and shimmering reflections — Power experiences a heightened emotional and sensory response, marked by awe and wonder. Through her work, she seeks to translate this sublime experience into a distilled visual language, comprising a harmonious amalgam of colour, texture, and form that evokes the sensations of light and air.
Her process involves the careful scumbling of successive layers of oil pigment on linen, resulting in paintings that aim to capture the transient beauty and atmosphere of her natural surroundings.
