Alizon Gray takes a spontaneous approach to her paintings as she builds layers of vibrant complementary colours to create her abstract landscapes. Each painting is a journey for the artist, as she seeks a delicate balance between the forms and space that naturally emerge in her work. Gray says of her practice — “My process is very intuitive and I never have a particular outcome in mind when I start a painting. Usually I pick a colour at random and start to make marks on the canvas. Each mark thereafter is in response to those previously placed; it is a dance between intuition and consideration. My hope is that I create windows to spaces that are a small respite from the everyday and allow a quiet moment to pause. I want people to feel calm when they look at my work. I often feel that the world is chaotic so I want my paintings be a counterpoint to that.”

Alizon Gray lives and works in the inner northern suburbs of Naarm / Melbourne. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Honors in 2005 at the Victorian College of the Arts, Gray has exhibited in exhibitions at Gallery Raye / Leighton Contemporary (QLD), Weswal Gallery (NSW), Fenton & Fenton (VIC), Michael Reid Northern Beaches (NSW), Saint Cloche (NSW), Boom Gallery (VIC), and Curated by Makeroom (Singapore). Gray has been a finalist in art prizes throughout Australia including the John Leslie Art Prize (2022 and 2024), Omnia Art Prize, Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize, Muswellbrook Prize, and mCollection award, amongst others. She has artwork in private and corporate collections in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, North America, and Europe.
