Michelle Wilkin is a New Zealand-born artist, working in abstract minimalism.

Based in Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland, Wilkin’s practice is inspired by the peaceful and evocative influences of nature. Using her signature neutral colour palette and a variety of techniques, Wilkin works on raw and unprimed canvas, manipulating layer upon layer of acrylic paint, creating an atmospheric, harmonious, soft effect as the paint soaks in to its surface and gradually desaturates. Her works are as much about the intention of subtle details, as they are the absence of them.

“My works are an escape from today's loud and busy world, offering a place for the viewer to sink into their thoughts and find comfort in the quiet spaces. My practice aims to challenge the concept of what some people may envision when thinking about abstract art.”

About this work from the ‘Spectrums’ series: “Spectrums is a series of abstract minimalism original fine artworks inspired by the sensory effects that colour has on our moods. Each artwork is a perfect blend of two opposing yet complementary colour tones, engaging the viewer, and encouraging them to sink into their thoughts and embrace the full spectrum before them. As the hues begin to merge, other colours present themselves, our senses are activated, and memories awakened. Coast to Coast I and II are the perfect blend across the spectrum. From subtle apricot sorbet to the freshest baby blue and every colour in between… reminiscent of long beach walks, sand under your toes and salt in your hair. This ultra calming pair will have you dreaming of days spent looking out at the ocean, while pondering all of life's mysteries.” - Michelle Wilkin
