Michelle Wilkin is a New Zealand-born artist, working in abstract minimalism.

Based in Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland, Wilkin’s practice is inspired by the peaceful and evocative influences of nature. Using her signature neutral colour palette and a variety of techniques, Wilkin works on raw and unprimed canvas, manipulating layer upon layer of acrylic paint, creating an atmospheric, harmonious, soft effect as the paint soaks in to its surface and gradually desaturates. Her works are as much about the intention of subtle details, as they are the absence of them.

“My works are an escape from today's loud and busy world, offering a place for the viewer to sink into their thoughts and find comfort in the quiet spaces. My practice aims to challenge the concept of what some people may envision when thinking about abstract art.”

About this work from the ‘Salt’ series: “Inspired by the call of the coast, this series explores our deep, instinctive connection to the sea – its rhythms, its energy, and its calming stillness. Like the sea, each piece captures a fleeting moment – here one second, washed over the next. A visual journal of life's ebbs and flows: the calm before the storm, and the quiet wisdom that follows. Rendered on raw natural canvas, the paint soaks into the fibres, softening its presence and allowing each hue to gently dissolve into the next. The desaturated palette evokes memories of sun-bleached driftwood, stranded rock pools and sacred surf breaks. This series invites contemplation, drawing the viewer inward like the tide – to pause, reflect, and feel the restorative rhythm of the coast.” - Michelle Wilkin
