Zoe Sernack lives and works on Eora Country in Sydney, Australia. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, she maintains a full-time, multidisciplinary studio practice.

Sernack’s work emerges from an intuitive engagement with the natural world. Through layered surfaces and abstracted forms, she explores the shifting terrain between landscape, memory, and the subconscious. Her paintings are driven as much by gesture, texture, and materiality as by place itself, evoking atmosphere, sensation, and emotional resonance rather than direct depiction.

Across 25 years and more than 65 exhibitions, Sernack has developed a deeply personal visual language, grounded in observation, process, and a lifelong commitment to making.

Artist Statement:

“My paintings are imagined abstract landscapes. I capture what emerges for me initially, a process of connecting memory, inspiration and my subconscious rather than representing somewhere specific. Through layers of mark making, paint and abstracted forms, I hope to engage the viewer and spark a personal connection of belonging through their own experiences, whether it be a sense of place, a feeling or igniting a memory.

My process is intuitive; I never have a particular outcome in mind when I start a painting. It is a play between perception, balance and consideration. I have an innate desire to engage with the world I experience. I am constantly fascinated by the intelligence of the natural world, its networks below the earth’s surface, and the flourishing compositions we see above the ground. I feel grateful and appreciative that I can be inspired by the Australian landscape and its prolific botanicals.” - Zoe Sernack
